Ralph Gibson and his work came into my consciousness gradually, then suddenly. By 1973, I had traveled to New York to meet him and attend his workshop. Then, over the next couple of years or so, I would see him in New York, Los Angeles and Yosemite (where he dared to ride in my old Land Rover). I will always remember and value the advice, insights, encouragement and challenge he gave me, particularly with regard to writing and work ethic — and about Leica.
