From Last Night

Shadows on the wall, streams of light through the curtains, backlit dust particles. These are among my first, my earliest memories as an infant. For the first eight years of my life, I was not to understand that my vision was not normal; blurry shadow and movement was not seen by others.
Even today I awake at night and, without finding my glasses, stare at the dim shadows in the corners of the ceiling or around the window blinds. The mystery and drama seen as a child can be seen again. Now and then I fumble for the bedside point & shoot camera, making sure the flash is turned off and my glasses remain on the table, and shoot in the dark.

Saigon, Vietnam (1967)

For a time in the 1967-1968 period, during the Vietnam War, I was assigned to and lived in  Saigon. By that time, I had “graduated” from my use of a Brownie Hawkeye camera (see an example of its output here) to a low-end Kodak Instamatic 126 (square 28mm image format) camera. My stint in Vietnam preceded my commitment to the serious pursuit of photography (and concomitant use of better tools), but strongly nudged me in that direction.   As I continue to sort through old materials that have not been seen for decades, a few images from Vietnam surface, usually in terrible condition. Here is an example, scanned from the original faded and scratched color slide, and converted to monochrome:

Stranded (1976)

Another recent discovery from long ago: Helping my sister drive her Dodge Dart from Iowa to California, we find ourselves stranded somewhere in Nevada…
