A Convening of Gangsters

The title of this post comes from my niece’s description upon her first viewing today.  My artist friend Roy took this photograph of — from left to right — my father, my mother and me in this foggy-noir vision in 1977 and sent it to me 46 years later.

More Fallen Angels

Continuing (see more) my recent rediscovery of the “Fallen Angels” film, something first seen in 1995:

NOTE: I stumbled across this film (and its predecessor “Chungking Express”, also directed by Wong Kar-wai) in a deep late-night dive into the MAX (formerly HBO Max) online streaming archives.

Fallen Angels

This 1995 Hong Kong film is one of my visual favorites.  Shot entirely on an extra-wide lens with lots of handheld camera movement, blur and extreme closeups.  Christopher Doyle with Chan Kwok-Hung did the cinematography; direction and writing was by Wong Kar-wai.   Here is a stack of a few screen captures, translated to black and white.

FaceTime with Herman Today

Today’s diary entry: Herman virtually “takes me with him” as he drives his Porsche, top-down, around Kansas City as I sit in front of my iPad in Washington state.

Photo Illustration by Lawrence

Filmmaker friend Kevin sees my illustration and responds by quoting from Hunter S. Thompson:

Raoul Duke: We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like: I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe you should drive. Suddenly, there was a terrible roar all around us, and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, and a voice was screaming: Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals? Huh! Huh! Huh! Fucking pigs!
Dr. Gonzo: Did you say something?
Raoul Duke: Hm? Never mind. It’s your turn to drive.
