Christmas Day in Los Angeles, 1993

Christmas Day Outside Our Downtown Loft – 1993: Ivi Anna, Kim, Nikolas

Another resurrection from the archives …

This one was originally a color snapshot made with a borrowed, cheap, entry-level Polaroid camera.  Then it was scanned some years ago.  When I recently rediscovered it, the thing was a 600px wide image that I am now bumping up to 2000px or thereabouts using a new copy of OnOne Software’s Perfect Resize 7 (formerly Genuine Fractals), as a test.   Click the image to see what happened.  I will probably further test this by trying to make some largish prints.

The Day

the-day-orchestralMoby gives us another free MP3 download, this an orchestral version of his The Day, included in a different arrangement on his new Destroyed album. Nice, peaceful, meditative. Along with the album is a selection of Moby’s own fine, mood-fitting photography, also shown on the site.

Vivian Maier Update

VivianMaier1029 (1)Back in December 2010, we talked about Vivian Maier. A traveling exhibition of her remarkable photographs is underway. The Vivian Maier website also is now showing quite a number of images, including one of my favorites, a self-portrait made in New York City in 1953, as shown here.

Crowdfunding PhotoJournalism

Emphas.is kicked off its website last month and appears to be on its way to great success.  The site accepts project proposals from visual journalists and invites “backers” to sign up to support the project of their choice for as little as $10.  This enables important photo projects to be funded that might otherwise find difficulty obtaining mainstream backing for any number of reasons.  Projects have to meet strict criteria, and are completely transparent — photographers see exactly why or why they were not funded and backers get to interact with the photographers and view progress.

One such project, undertaken by the internationally-recognized photojournalist, Tomas Van Houtryve, amassed even more than his targeted goal within a few days, drawing the support of xxx backers. You can find more about his story on his own site, on the Emphasis.is site, on the A Photo Editor site or TVH’s Facebook page.
